What is ASCII?

ASCII assigns 7-bit codes 0 through 127 to letters, digits, punctuation and control characters. Codes 0–31 and 127 are controls. Space is code 32, uppercase A is 65, and lowercase a is 97. A displayed eight-bit byte adds a leading zero; it does not extend ASCII.

Common control codes

Tab is 9 (HT), line feed is 10 (LF), carriage return is 13 (CR), and delete is 127 (DEL). LF moves to a new line; CR historically returns to the start of a line. Many text files use LF or CR followed by LF for line endings. The visible control pictures in the converter are labels; copying the exact result preserves the actual codes.

Why are there different eight-bit tables?

ASCII defines only 0–127. Windows-1252 and ISO-8859-1 assign different meanings to some bytes above 127: byte 0x80 is a euro sign in Windows-1252 but a C1 control in ISO-8859-1. An HTML numeric reference names a Unicode character, not a byte in either encoding. Undefined Windows-1252 bytes remain undefined here.

How to convert text

Choose Text to codes or Codes to text and a base, then select Convert. Encoded codes are space-separated. For decoding, spaces, tabs, newlines or single commas separate codes. Hex can use a 0x prefix and binary a 0b prefix. The tool rejects non-ASCII text and codes above 127 instead of silently changing them. Input and output are limited to 2 MiB each.
