For mixed foods, added caffeine or an uncertain product, get a vet assessment rather than treating a category estimate as a measurement.

Use the chocolate amount, not the whole weight of a mixed dessert. If the amount is unknown, call your vet instead of guessing.

Dark chocolate only; read the package. Blank uses a generic sweet/semisweet estimate that may underestimate high-cocoa bars. Ignored for other types.

What this means

F-PETS-CHOCO-001 converts weight ounces to grams using 28.349523125 g/oz. F-PETS-CHOCO-002: estimated combined mg = chocolate grams × category mg/g; dose mg/kg = combined mg ÷ dog kg. These are theobromine plus caffeine, not theobromine alone.

F-PETS-CHOCO-003 uses 15.5 × cocoa percentage ÷100 for an optional dark-bar estimate. Merck’s65% example is about10.1mg/g. Without a percentage,5.6mg/g represents the upper end of its generic sweet/semisweet range, not a worst case for all dark chocolate.

F-PETS-CHOCO-004 compares unrounded dose with reference levels20mg/kg (clinical signs),40mg/kg (start of a40–50 cardiac-effects range), and60mg/kg (seizure effects). These are not individual clinical cutoffs. Displayed dose rounds to two decimals, so a rounded boundary may still fall in the lower band.

Please seek medical advice from your vet. This tool is not veterinary advice and has no veterinary-review endorsement. A low, zero or white-chocolate estimate never rules out other hazards. Do not wait for symptoms or use this page to decide on home treatment.

Chocolate source figures and theobromine context

Merck’s current combined figures drive the engine. The separate ASPCA March2001 theobromine-only figures are historical composition examples, not current product measurements and not interchangeable with the engine values. All composition varies.

Frequently asked questions

Can this chocolate toxicity calculator tell me my dog is safe?

No. It estimates exposure and cannot clear a dog or predict symptoms. Call your vet or a pet poison line now, including for a low or zero result. Please seek medical advice from your vet; this is not veterinary advice.

Is the calculated dose theobromine alone?

No. The engine uses Merck’s combined methylxanthines: theobromine plus caffeine. The separate historical ASPCA table below is theobromine-only context and is not used to calculate the dose or band.

Why does cocoa percentage matter for dark chocolate?

A high-cocoa bar may contain more methylxanthines than the generic sweet/semisweet category. Use the label percentage when known, keep the packaging and contact your vet; even a percentage-based estimate is not a product assay.

What if I do not know how much chocolate was eaten?

Call your vet or a pet poison line with the product and possible time of exposure. An unknown amount or mixed recipe cannot be reliably assessed by entering zero or guessing the chocolate content.

Can I use this for grapes or raisins?

No. Grapes and raisins present a different kidney-injury concern. Contact your vet for suspected exposure; this page does not calculate a tolerable amount.
