Assumptions and formula
The account is run month by month for 21 years from April of the opening year. Interest for each month is worked on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month and credited on 31 March, so it compounds once a year (scheme paragraph 5). Deposits are made for 15 years. Each month uses the rate the Ministry of Finance set for that quarter, from 9.1% in December 2014 to 8.2% since January 2024; after September 2026 it uses the rate you enter.
A deposit made by the 5th of a month earns interest from that month; one made later earns from the next. So a yearly deposit made by 5 April earns for twelve months in its first year, monthly deposits earn for an average of six and a half, and a March deposit earns nothing that year. The education withdrawal takes the share you enter of the balance at the end of the year before she turns 18. Deposits qualify for Section 80C under the old regime; interest and maturity are tax-free.
Worked example
₹1,50,000 deposited by 5 April each year from 2026, opened when she is 1: year one earns ₹12,300, and the account matures in 2046-47, when she is 22, at about ₹71.8 lakh, ₹49.3 lakh of it interest. The same deposits made each March reach about ₹66.4 lakh, ₹5.4 lakh less. Withdrawing 50% at 18 takes out about ₹26.2 lakh and leaves about ₹35.9 lakh at maturity.
