Assumptions and formula
An NSC (VIII Issue) earns the rate in force on the day it is bought, fixed for its five years. Interest is compounded once a year and paid with the deposit at maturity: maturity = deposit × (1 + rate)⁵. The rates by quarter are those published by the National Savings Institute, from 8.0% in April 2019 through 6.8% (April 2020 to December 2022) to 7.7% since April 2023.
Each year’s interest accrues and is taxable that year at your slab rate plus 4% cess, though it is paid only at maturity. Under the old regime the deposit qualifies for Section 80C in the year of purchase, and the interest of years 1 to 4 is treated as reinvested and qualifies too, within the ₹1.5 lakh limit for all 80C investments; only the fifth year’s interest is then taxed. The new regime has no 80C. The return after tax is worked on the interest alone: the deposit’s own 80C saving is shown apart because any 80C investment would give it.
Worked example
₹1,00,000 bought in July to September 2026 at 7.7% matures at ₹1,44,903: interest of ₹7,700, ₹8,293, ₹8,931, ₹9,619 and ₹10,360. At a 30% slab in the new regime the tax on it is ₹14,010 and the return after tax 5.53% a year. In the old regime the reinvested interest of years 1 to 4 counts for 80C, the net tax falls to ₹3,232 and the return is 7.22%, before the ₹31,200 the deposit itself saves.
Frequently asked questions
How much is ₹1 lakh in NSC after 5 years?
₹1,44,903 at 7.7%, compounded yearly: ₹44,903 of interest. After tax at a 30% slab in the new regime the return is about 5.5% a year.
What is the NSC interest rate now?
7.7% a year, compounded yearly, for certificates bought in July to September 2026, the latest quarter published by the National Savings Institute. It has been 7.7% since April 2023; it was 6.8% from April 2020 to December 2022. The rate on the day you buy applies for all five years.
How much will ₹1 lakh in NSC give after 5 years?
₹1,44,903 at 7.7%: ₹44,903 of interest, rising from ₹7,700 in the first year to ₹10,360 in the fifth as the interest compounds. ₹1,000 grows to ₹1,449.
Is NSC interest taxable?
Yes, every year as it accrues, at your slab rate, though it is paid only at maturity. Under the old regime the interest of years 1 to 4 counts as reinvested and qualifies for Section 80C, so in practice only the fifth year’s interest is taxed. Under the new regime all of it is taxed: at a 30% slab, ₹1 lakh earns about 5.5% a year after tax.
NSC or PPF or a 5-year FD?
NSC pays 7.7% for five years, fixed; PPF pays 7.1% (variable) for 15 years but the interest is tax-free; a post office 5-year time deposit pays 7.5%. Under the old regime NSC’s reinvested interest also counts for 80C. Under the new regime at a high slab, PPF’s tax-free interest usually wins over a long period.
Can I withdraw NSC before maturity?
Not normally. Premature encashment is allowed only on the death of a holder, on forfeiture by a pledgee, or by court order. You can pledge the certificate to a bank for a loan.
