Assumptions and formula

A cumulative deposit grows as P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t), compounded quarterly by default because that is how Indian banks credit FD interest; whole quarters are compounded and any part quarter at the end earns simple interest. Deposits of 6 months or less earn simple interest only. A monthly or quarterly payout deposit pays simple interest each period and returns the deposit at the end.

Tax: FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate every year, plus 4% cess, whether it is paid out or reinvested. The bank withholds TDS of 10% when a year’s interest from it exceeds ₹50,000, or ₹1 lakh for senior citizens, from 1 April 2025; TDS is credited against your tax. The today’s-money figure discounts the deposit plus after-tax interest by the inflation rate over the tenure.

Worked example

₹1 lakh at 7% for 5 years, compounded quarterly, matures at ₹1,41,478: ₹41,478 of interest, an effective 7.19% a year. At the 30% slab you keep ₹28,537 of it, and in today’s money at 5% inflation the whole amount is worth about ₹1,00,712.

Frequently asked questions

What does ₹1 lakh in an FD become in 5 years?

About ₹1,41,478 at 7% compounded quarterly: ₹41,478 of interest. At the 30% tax slab you keep ₹28,537 of that interest, and in today’s money at 5% inflation the deposit and after-tax interest are worth about ₹1,00,712.

How is FD interest calculated?

For a cumulative deposit, A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t), with n = 4 because Indian banks compound quarterly. ₹1 lakh at 7% for 5 years matures at ₹1,41,478, an effective yield of 7.19% a year. Compounded yearly it would be ₹1,40,255, and monthly ₹1,41,763, which is why the compounding frequency should match your bank’s.

Do short FDs earn compound interest?

No. Banks pay simple interest on deposits of 6 months or less, so ₹1 lakh at 7% for 6 months earns ₹3,500, not the slightly higher compounded figure. Longer deposits compound for each whole quarter, with simple interest on any part quarter at the end.

When is TDS deducted on FD interest?

When the interest a bank pays you in a financial year is over ₹50,000, or ₹1 lakh for senior citizens, from 1 April 2025. The bank withholds 10% (20% without a PAN). ₹10 lakh at 7% earns ₹71,859 in its first year, so ₹7,186 would be withheld. A Form 15G or 15H stops TDS if your total income is below the taxable limit, but it does not make the interest tax-free.

How much do I keep from an FD after tax?

Interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate each year, plus 4% cess. ₹1 lakh at 7% for 5 years earns ₹41,478; at the 30% slab you keep ₹28,537. Adjusted for 5% inflation, the deposit and that interest are worth about ₹1,00,712 in today’s money, barely more than you put in.

What is the difference between cumulative and monthly payout FDs?

A cumulative FD adds the interest to the deposit, so it compounds and you get it all at maturity. A monthly or quarterly payout FD pays the interest out as it is earned, so it does not compound: ₹12 lakh at 7% pays ₹7,000 a month, and over 3 years earns ₹2.52 lakh, less than the cumulative ₹2.78 lakh.

Is this an FD rate calculator for any bank?

Yes. This fixed deposit calculator works for any bank, post office or small finance bank FD: enter the rate the bank quotes for your tenure. As an FD interest calculator and FD maturity calculator it shows the interest, the maturity value and, unlike most fixed deposit interest rate calculators, what you keep after tax and inflation. It doubles as a fixed deposit rates calculator: enter any bank’s rate to compare.

Is this an FD return calculator?

Yes: an FD return calculator and FD interest calculator that shows the maturity amount and interest for any bank’s rate, compounded quarterly as most Indian banks do.
