Assumptions and formula
The hourly rate is the yearly pay divided by the hours you are paid for: paid hours a week × 52. On 40 hours that is 2,080 hours a year. Monthly, semi-monthly, biweekly and weekly pay are turned into a year first (× 12, 24, 26 or 52), and the table shows every period; a day is a fifth of a five-day week.
The rate per hour you actually work divides the same salary by the hours at work: hours worked a week × 52, less a day’s hours for each paid holiday or vacation day. Extra hours lower it; paid time off raises it. The overtime check compares your weekly pay with the federal salary level for exemption, $684 a week ($35,568 a year): below it you are owed time and a half for hours over 40. The hourly offer pays hours over 40 at time and a half and nothing for the days off it does not pay for.
Worked example
$75,000 a year on 40 paid hours is $36.06 an hour: $6,250 a month, $2,884.62 biweekly and $1,442.31 a week. Working 50 hours a week with 10 holidays and 15 vacation days is 2,350 hours, $31.91 an hour. A $38-an-hour job with no paid days off earns $71,440, $3,560 less; it needs $39.89 an hour to match.
Frequently asked questions
How much is $75,000 a year an hour?
$36.06 an hour on 40 hours a week (2,080 hours a year). Working 50 hours with 25 paid days off it is $31.91 for each hour actually worked.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the yearly salary by the hours you are paid for in a year: hours a week × 52. On 40 hours that is 2,080 hours, so $75,000 a year is $36.06 an hour and $50,000 is $24.04. A quick check: half the salary in thousands is roughly the hourly rate.
What is my real hourly pay if I work more than 40 hours?
The salary divided by the hours you actually work. A $75,000 salary for 50 hours a week with 25 paid days off is 2,350 hours a year, $31.91 an hour, against $36.06 on paper. Paid time off raises the rate per hour worked: at 40 hours with the same days off it is $39.89.
Is a salaried employee owed overtime?
If they are paid less than $684 a week ($35,568 a year) the federal exemption does not apply and they are owed time and a half for hours over 40, whatever their title. Above that level it depends on their duties: executive, administrative and professional roles can be exempt. Some states, such as California and New York, set higher levels.
Is a salary or an hourly job paying the same rate better?
Compare a year’s pay, not the rate. An hourly job pays for every overtime hour at time and a half, but usually not for holidays and vacation. Against a $75,000 salary with 25 paid days off, a $38-an-hour job with no paid days off earns $71,440: $3,560 less. It needs $39.89 an hour to match.
How much is $60,000 a year an hour, biweekly and monthly?
$28.85 an hour on 40 hours, $2,307.69 biweekly (26 paychecks), $2,500 semi-monthly (24), $5,000 a month and $1,153.85 a week, before tax.
Is this a salary to hourly calculator or a salary converter?
Both: a salary to hourly calculator and salary to hourly pay converter that turns an annual salary, or a monthly, semi-monthly, biweekly or weekly amount, into an hourly rate and every other pay period. Use it as an annual salary to hourly calculator, salary to hourly converter or salary to hourly wage calculator.
How do I convert an annual salary to hourly?
Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year: 2,080 for 40 hours a week. $60,000 is $28.85 an hour. This annual salary to hourly conversion also runs the other way, from an hourly rate to a salary.
Is there an hourly rate to salary chart?
Yes: the table on this page is an hourly rate to salary chart, showing the yearly, monthly, semi-monthly, biweekly, weekly and daily pay for the same hourly rate.
