Assumptions and formula
The area is turned into square feet with the state’s bigha, then into acres (43,560 sq ft), square metres, gaj (9 sq ft) and hectares. Entered in acres or another unit, it is divided by the state’s bigha to give bigha.
No state revenue document was available, so each state’s bigha comes from published references: a single value where at least two agree, otherwise the range they give, with both ends shown in every result. The references for each state are listed in the table. The legal area of a plot is the one in its land record and sale deed, which may use a district’s own bigha.
Worked example
5 bigha in West Bengal (14,400 sq ft each) is 72,000 sq ft, 1.653 acres or 6,689 m². 1 acre in Gujarat (17,424 sq ft bigha) is exactly 2.5 bigha. 2 bigha in Haryana, where published values run from 9,000 to 27,225 sq ft, is between 18,000 and 54,450 sq ft: check the land record.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet is 1 bigha in West Bengal?
14,400 sq ft (20 katha of 720 sq ft), about 0.33 acre, so 3 bigha is roughly 1 acre.
How many acres is 1 bigha?
It depends on the state. In West Bengal and Assam 1 bigha is 14,400 sq ft, about 0.33 acre (3 bigha ≈ 1 acre). In Uttar Pradesh a pucca bigha is 27,000 sq ft, about 0.62 acre. In Gujarat and for Rajasthan’s kachha bigha it is 17,424 sq ft, exactly 0.4 acre, so 1 acre is 2.5 bigha.

Why do websites give different bigha values for the same state?
The bigha was fixed district by district in the old settlement surveys and was never standardised nationally, and most sites copy values without a source. For Haryana, published values range from 9,000 to 27,225 sq ft. Where references disagree this calculator shows the range rather than one number.
What is a pucca and a kachha bigha?
Two sizes used side by side in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. In Uttar Pradesh the pucca bigha is about 27,000 sq ft and the kachha bigha about a third of it, 9,000 to 9,075 sq ft; in Rajasthan the kachha bigha is 17,424 sq ft. Check which one a land record or seller means.
How do I convert acres to bigha?
Divide the square feet in an acre, 43,560, by the state’s bigha in square feet. In West Bengal 1 acre = 43,560 ÷ 14,400 = 3.025 bigha; in Gujarat 2.5 bigha; for a UP pucca bigha 1.613. Choose “Acre” as the unit to convert the other way.
