Paycheck guides

These guides explain the payroll concepts behind the calculator and link back to the specific paycheck tools for testing scenarios.

When this calculator fits

Virginia payroll withholding uses its own employer formula, not the standard deduction from an annual joint income-tax return. The current employer guide applies a fixed $8,750 deduction and separate personal and age/blindness exemptions. Keeping those certificate entries distinct makes a Virginia paycheck estimate easier to reconcile with payroll.

How to use this Virginia paycheck calculator

Use this Virginia paycheck calculator for a U.S. paycheck estimate with federal withholding, FICA, deductions, and automatic employer exact-formula withholding.

It also addresses related questions around Virginia paycheck calculator, Virginia salary calculator and Virginia take home pay calculator. The terms are grouped by the job a visitor is trying to complete, so the page stays readable instead of repeating the same phrase in different forms.

What matters for Virginia paychecks

Virginia payroll withholding uses its own employer formula, not the standard deduction from an annual joint income-tax return. The current employer guide applies a fixed $8,750 deduction and separate personal and age/blindness exemptions. Keeping those certificate entries distinct makes a Virginia paycheck estimate easier to reconcile with payroll.

The result should be read as a paycheck estimate for Virginia, not a payroll instruction. Confirm unusual cases, local tax rules, employer setup, and official withholding treatment with payroll or a qualified authority.

For hourly, salary, take-home, W-4, bonus and paystub questions, start from the U.S. paycheck calculator, which lists each page; all of them apply the same federal calculation this page does.

How the paycheck estimate is worked out

How Virginia withholding is worked out

The Virginia exact method annualizes taxable payroll wages across the selected pay frequency. A weekly paycheck has 52 periods, a biweekly check 26, a semimonthly check 24 and a monthly check 12. Qualifying pre-tax payroll deductions reduce the wage base before annualization. The fixed payroll deduction is $8,750, regardless of whether the federal filing status is single or married filing jointly. The larger deduction associated with an annual married return is not substituted here: a return calculation and an employer withholding formula serve different purposes and may produce different interim deductions.

Your VA-4 personal and dependent exemption count belongs in the state allowance field. Each exemption subtracts $930 from annualized payroll wages. Age and blindness exemptions have their own field and subtract $800 each. These are counts, not dollar amounts, and the calculator rejects negative or fractional counts rather than silently changing your certificate. If you claim both kinds, enter each count separately. The default count is zero; it is an initial scenario, not a claim that every employee has zero exemptions or should submit a particular certificate.

After the deductions and exemptions, a negative annual taxable remainder becomes zero. The exact schedule applies 2% to the first $3,000, 3% to the next $2,000, 5% to the next $12,000, and 5.75% above $17,000. The annual result is divided by pay periods and only the final paycheck withholding is rounded to cents. As a reproducible illustration, $1,000 of weekly taxable wages with no exemptions produces $42.87. With two personal exemptions and one age/blindness exemption, that same weekly wage produces $39.93. Neither illustration predicts a refund or year-end balance due.

A complete state withholding override replaces the Virginia income-tax result with the amount you know from payroll. An entered zero is meaningful and remains distinct from leaving the override blank. Use this route for an employer-specific certificate instruction, an exempt certificate, or a separately paid supplemental-wage method that the ordinary formula does not reproduce. The federal W-4 adjustments still apply independently to federal withholding. A state override does not change Social Security or Medicare, and any separate local amount belongs in its own entry.

Does Virginia withholding use federal filing status? The modeled Virginia exact formula uses its fixed payroll deduction and your VA-4 exemption counts. Federal filing status still affects federal withholding.

A worked Virginia paycheck

This illustrative Virginia scenario uses a single filer earning $65,000 annually, paid biweekly with zero withholding allowances and no pre-tax deductions. This salary is an example, not a measured state median. The numbers come from this page's own engine; change the inputs to match your pay and certificate.

Virginia: $65,000 a year, paid biweekly

LineAmount per paycheck
Gross paycheck$2,500.00
Federal income tax-$216.15
Social Security-$155.00
Medicare-$36.25
State income tax-$114.50
Estimated take-home pay$1,978.10

Under these example assumptions, take-home is $1,978.10 biweekly and $51,430.60 annually. Monthly averages spread 26 checks across 12 months; they are not a promise of identical monthly deposits. Unsupported local taxes or employee programs need separate entries.

Where these figures come from

The Virginia Tax employer withholding instructions, revised May 2025, provide the exact formula for wages after July 1, 2025 and remain the applicable employer source for this 2026 model. The fixed $8,750 deduction and $930/$800 exemption amounts are taken from that payroll formula. Sources were reviewed on 14 October 2026. The salary illustration below is a scenario, not a Virginia median wage statistic.

Why location coverage is labeled

Virginia cross-border employment needs more than a state dropdown. Reciprocity can depend on a residence state and a valid employer certificate, while a nonresident may have only part of a check attributable to Virginia work. This page does not infer either condition from your federal filing status. Confirm the employer’s wage allocation and certificate treatment before entering an override. Ordinary employer-paid unemployment charges are not employee paycheck deductions. If your paystub has another deduction, identify its purpose and enter a verified employee amount rather than adding a guessed state percentage.

Coverage stays labeled in the result either way. Where a rule is not verified it is named as unsupported rather than guessed, and a manual override field is available when you know the amount from payroll guidance or an official source.

What this page assumes

The calculator converts salary or hourly earnings into one gross paycheck, subtracts pre-tax deductions, annualizes federal taxable wages for a W-4-style withholding estimate, applies FICA, then subtracts any entered state/local withholding and post-tax deductions.

Federal and FICA calculations run locally from versioned 2026 rule data. State and local withholding are coverage-labeled: unsupported jurisdictions are not silently guessed, and you can enter known withholding amounts when you have them. This is not tax, legal, payroll, or financial advice.

Common paycheck calculator mistakes

What this calculator leaves out: This calculator is an educational estimate. It does not provide tax, legal, payroll, accounting, insurance, or financial advice; it does not file forms; it does not know every employer-specific benefit rule, local tax, wage-base history, payroll correction, reimbursement, or year-to-date adjustment; and unsupported state or local rules are not silently guessed.
