The reference values are published separately for men and women — 3.7 and 2.7 litres of total water a day — because average body size and water turnover differ.

Adults 19 and over. Children and adolescents have their own, lower reference values; older adults often have reduced thirst sensation and may need a deliberate routine rather than a larger number.

Activity and climate

How active your day is before any deliberate exercise. The factors here are estimates layered on the reference value, not published figures.

Counted at 400 ml per 30 minutes, which sits at the low-middle of measured sweat rates. Your own rate can be found by weighing yourself before and after a session: each kilogram lost is about a litre of fluid.

Heat raises losses through sweat and breathing. These allowances are rough: 350 ml for warm, 700 ml for hot. Humidity, sun exposure and acclimatisation all move the real figure.

Assumptions and formula

The starting point is the US National Academies Adequate Intake for total water: 3.7 litres a day for adult men and 2.7 for adult women, rising to 3.0 in pregnancy and 3.8 when breastfeeding. That reference is scaled for body size on the square root of the weight ratio, multiplied by an activity factor, and increased for exercise and heat. About 20% of total water comes from food on a normal diet, so the drinking figure is the total less that share.

Adequate Intake is a population reference — the median intake of people who are adequately hydrated — not a threshold anyone must reach. The size, activity, exercise and climate adjustments are estimates layered on top of it, not published values; sweat rates alone run from 0.5 to over 2 litres an hour, so weighing yourself before and after a session gives a better figure than any multiplier. Healthy adults regulate water by thirst, and pale-yellow urine is a better day-to-day guide than a target.

Worked example

A 76 kg sedentary man in a temperate climate lands on the reference itself: 3,700 ml of total water, of which about 740 ml comes from food, leaving 2,960 ml — roughly 11.8 glasses of 250 ml — to drink. Add 60 minutes of exercise and it rises to 4,500 ml total. "Eight glasses a day" is 2,000 ml of drinks, which for this person is about a third short.

Frequently asked questions

Where does "eight glasses of water a day" come from?

Not from evidence. The usual trail leads to a 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation of about 2.5 litres a day — which went on to say, in the very next sentence, that most of that quantity is contained in prepared foods. The qualifier was dropped and the figure became a drinking target. Reviews in the BMJ and the American Journal of Physiology have looked for support for the eight-glasses rule and found none.

How much water should I actually drink a day?

The US National Academies set an Adequate Intake of 3.7 litres of total water a day for men and 2.7 for women; EFSA gives 2.5 and 2.0. Take off the roughly 20% that comes from food and that is about 3.0 litres of drinks for men and 2.2 for women — before adjusting for body size, activity, exercise and heat. These are population medians, not thresholds; thirst is a reliable guide for healthy adults.

Does what I drink have to be water?

No. All drinks count toward fluid intake, including tea, coffee, milk and juice. Caffeine has a mild diuretic effect at high doses, but ordinary tea and coffee still leave a net fluid gain — the idea that they dehydrate you does not survive measurement. Sugary drinks count for hydration but bring calories with them, so water remains the sensible default.

Should I drink half my body weight in ounces?

That rule has no published basis either. It gives 75 oz (2.2 L) for a 150 lb person and 110 oz (3.3 L) for a 220 lb one, which happens to land near the reference range for many adults — but it scales linearly with weight, and water turnover does not. This calculator scales on the square root of the weight ratio instead, so a large body is not given a proportionally larger target.

Can you drink too much water?

Yes. Drinking far more than the kidneys can excrete — roughly 0.8 to 1 litre an hour — dilutes blood sodium and causes hyponatraemia, which can be serious and occasionally fatal. It is rare but documented in endurance athletes and in water-drinking challenges. Spread intake through the day rather than forcing large volumes, and in long endurance events replace sodium as well as fluid.

How much water should I drink a day?

The reference values are about 2.7 litres a day of total water for women and 3.7 litres for men, of which roughly a fifth comes from food, so the amount to drink is nearer 2.2 and 3 litres. Those are population averages: a daily water intake calculator adjusts them for body size, exercise and heat, because an hour of hard exercise can add half a litre or more. This page starts from the published adequate intake and applies those adjustments, which is what separates a hydration calculator from a slogan about eight glasses.

How is water intake by weight worked out?

The common rule is about 30 to 35 ml per kilogram of body weight a day, so a 70 kg adult lands near 2.1 to 2.5 litres, close to the published adequate intake once food water is removed. Water intake by weight is a reasonable starting point because larger bodies lose more water, but it ignores activity and climate, which this page adds on top. Treat any per-kilogram figure as the resting baseline and expect a hot day or an hour of exercise to add half a litre or more.
