Assumptions and formula
Net worth is everything you own less everything you owe. Liquid net worth counts only cash and taxable investments, less consumer debt (credit cards, car, student and other loans), because home equity and retirement accounts take time, a sale or tax to turn into money. Debt to assets is what you owe as a share of what you own.
The comparison uses the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances 2022, the latest available: family net worth by age of the family head, median and mean. The survey is in 2022 dollars; the figures here are multiplied by 1.1446, the rise in the CPI-U from the 2022 average to August 2026. The median is the family in the middle; the mean is pulled up by the wealthiest families.
Worked example
Age 38 with $15,000 cash, $40,000 invested, $120,000 in a 401(k), a $400,000 home and a $20,000 car, against a $280,000 mortgage, $12,000 car loan, $25,000 of student loans and $3,000 on cards: net worth $275,000, liquid net worth $15,000, home equity $120,000. The median for families aged 35 to 44 is about $154,900 in today’s dollars, so this is 1.8 times the median.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average net worth by age?
In the Federal Reserve’s 2022 survey the mean for families aged 35 to 44 was $548,070, but the median was $135,300; the median is the fairer yardstick.
How do I calculate my net worth?
Add up what you own (cash, investments, retirement accounts, your home and car at what they would sell for) and subtract what you owe (mortgage, car and student loans, cards). $595,000 of assets and $320,000 of debts is a net worth of $275,000.
What is the median net worth by age?
From the Federal Reserve’s 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances, in 2022 dollars: under 35, $39,040; 35 to 44, $135,300; 45 to 54, $246,700; 55 to 64, $364,270; 65 to 74, $410,000; 75 and over, $334,700. All families: $192,700. Adjusted to 2026 prices with the CPI, multiply by about 1.145.
Why is average net worth so much higher than median?
A small number of very wealthy families pull the mean up. For families aged 35 to 44 the mean was $548,070 in 2022 against a median of $135,300, four times higher; for all families, $1,059,470 against $192,700. Compare yourself with the median.
What is a good net worth?
Being above the median for your age puts you ahead of half of families. A common rule of thumb (from The Millionaire Next Door) is age × pre-tax income ÷ 10. More useful is the trend: net worth rising each year, and liquid savings that cover several months of spending.
Should I include my house and retirement accounts?
Yes, in net worth: they are yours. But you cannot spend home equity without selling or borrowing, and retirement accounts carry tax and penalties before 59½, so the calculator also shows liquid net worth without them.
Is this a personal net worth calculator?
Yes: a net worth calculator and personal net worth calculator that also works as a net worth by age comparison with Federal Reserve data, and a household net worth calculator for couples entering joint figures.
What is net worth?
Net worth means everything you own minus everything you owe. The net worth equation is assets − liabilities: a $350,000 home, $60,000 of savings and a $250,000 mortgage give a net worth of $160,000. This net worth calculator also shows your percentile for your age.
